Commander Walter Mainor, a native of Montgomery, took command of the navy guided-missile destroyer USS William P. Lawrence on June 11. Commander Mainor is the son of Myrtle Mainor and the late Walter Mainor and the grandson of Ovetta Caver.

Mainor graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and enlisted in the Navy in June of 1987, where he served as a Sonar Technician Submarines in USS Francis Scott Key. He graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1997. He attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and received a Master of Business Administration degree in 2005.

Mainor has had several operational assignments on destroyers, cruisers and mine counter measure ships to include USS Oldendorf, USS Donald Cook and USS Vella Gulf. He was Commanding Officer in USS Patriot home ported in Sasebo, Japan. During his tour, Patriot successfully executed the longest deployment to date for an MCM, traveling over 14,000 nautical miles in four months making port calls to nine countries. She was the first US Warship to make port calls to Bangladesh and Port Blair, India.

Mainor reported to William P. Lawrence in October 2013, and previously served as executive officer as part of the fleet-up program. The program features an 18-month executive officer tour followed by a commanding officer tour aboard the same ship.

He said the fleet-up program has allowed him to become familiar with the crew and the ship before assuming command of William P. Lawrence.

Mainor attributes his upbringing that keeps him grounded and able to handle whatever adversity that comes his way.

“My parents and grandmother instilled in me a hard work ethic and taught me to treat people with respect and how you would want to be treated.

“I’m excited and humbled to take command of a ship named after such an incredible man and naval officer” Mainor said. “The crew is truly remarkable. It’s amazing to watch the sailors of William P. Lawrence come together and accomplish every task. I look forward to all of our future operations in preparation for deployment.”

William P. Lawrence is conducting integrated training with the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis and Carrier Strike Group 3 in preparation for a future deployment.
